There is an overview of free management software here, although interestingly, DigiKam si not mentioned. There are plenty of programs that will do that under Windows, and they are all better than DigiKam. You might also try looking at FastStone, XnView and some people seem to like Picasa.Īlthough some of the other paid for programs (PaintShopPro, AfterShotPro) do a reasonable job of image management, none of them can hold a candle to Lightroom for image management.įorget dual boot and Linux if all you need is a DAM. I also paid for IMatch, which is one of the most user-unfriendly programs I have tried, even in it's latest (v5) form. The fact that Digikam is FOSS is an added bonus too (. I've tried numerous DAM programs (in Windows) and I found the free version of Zoner PhotoStudio to be a decent tool, although I eventually settled on Photo Supreme (formery IDImager) which is a paid for program. Ive found that I greatly prefer Digikam (despite XnViewMP doing some cool backend stuff with WebP files). One of the USPs of the app is that it supports 500 image formats. SView5 may also run on Linux/x86 and MacOS/x86 using Mono. Face detection and recognition is difficult, but XnView could simply start with reading these schemas (MS People Tags, MWG Regions, and IPTC Person Shown), and listing the People Names similarly as 'tags' for search. Moving onto the next app we have XnView which is an image and file manager. This enables reading and writing to a variety of formats, including JPEG, JPEG2000, Apple Icon Image format, TIFF, PNG, PDF, BMP and more. I found it the slowest image management software I've ever tried.Īfter about 5 hours it had only loaded about half my 27,000 images into it's database.Īlong with the caveats about it not being fully supported by Windows, this was enough to make me give up trying to use it as a DAM. Many applications on Mac OS X use either the Core Image or QuickTime APIs for image support. I tried an earlier version of DigiKam for Windows some time ago. digiKam displays lengthy text IPTC, such as Captions/Comments without clipping XnView is better for displaying limited character fields. If you've used it in Windows, what were your impressions? If you've used it in both Windows and Linux, how does it compare?Īre there any other Free or Open Source Software options to look at that can compare to Adobe Lightroom or Bridge, or have the features of DigiKam? The updated digiKam adds a number of new features and bug fixes, according to the team behind the software, including an important update to the softwares face-detection capability, which now utilizes deep learning technology to better detect both human and animal faces. DigiKam seems to check all the boxes as a program that can do anything, but it's a Linux program that says it only has "partial" Windows support. Does anyone have experience using DigiKam as their image organizer in Windows? I am looking for a program that does it all, but I can't afford any of the Adobe options at the moment.
